Denovo’s Chairside Space Maintainer System
Primary dentition plays an important role in pediatric dentistry. Premature loss or extraction of primary molars can have significant detrimental effects because of tooth drift. Maintaining space is critical, but it requires early and quick intervention. Traditional methods involve multiple appointments, impressions, and significantly time-consuming and expensive custom lab work.
The Denovo chairside space-maintainer system streamlines the process of creating and installing a custom unilateral, band and loop space maintainer. You can complete this 3-step process chairside in just minutes with only one patient visit while the patient is still numb from extraction:
— Firstly, you trial fit a Space Maintainer band or crown.
— Secondly, you’ll insert a wire, size to the gap & crimp the tubes.
— And then finish by cementing the appliance in place.
No more dealing with the time-consuming hassle of multiple appointments and expensive lab devices! With the Denovo chairside space-maintainer system you can quickly guide the way for erupting permanent teeth, resulting in an efficient workflow, healthy smiles and happy patients.
Technique
Start by selecting 1 to 3 approximate band or crown sizes from the Denovo Space Maintainer kit and then trial fit them to the tooth neighboring the space. A properly fitted band will slide onto the tooth with a tight, snug fit. The stronger the fit, the more durable the device will be.
If you trial size a band but do not fully place it, you should sterilize the band and put it back into the kit for future use.
Wires widths are narrow or wide to match the smaller and larger band or crown size ranges respectively. We color-code band sizes in the kit according to the matching wire. Select the wire type based on the clinical situation presented:
- Drop wires: curve upward to prevent drifting of the wire into the gingiva.
- Plain wires: are highly customizable, with the ability to adapt to most clinical situations.
- Occlusal rest wires: provide added stability and support by bending over the occlusal ridge
- Distal Shoe: With proper placement and x-ray verification, you can seat distal shoe wires sub-gingivally if the first permanent molar has not fully erupted yet.
Trim the chosen wire (as necessary) and then insert into the tubes. Re-seat the appliance and slide the wire across the gap to save the space. Adding curvature to the loop to the natural contour of the gingiva helps prevent the wire from drifting into the gingiva.
Apply a solid, circular crimp to both tubes to firmly lock the wires into place. Finally, cement the finished device into place using your preferred glass ionomer cement.

Great start up kit and easy to replace as needed. The pliers that come with it are great for putting the 2 pieces together but they do not cut so you will need to order the wire cutters as well. Overall very happy with this purchase and will continue to restock the box from Denovo.

Question: It is stated many times that your bands are diameter sized, but then you say your band is the length of the band stretched if cut. So really your band size is the circumference correct? So if we measured the diameter of the tooth, we should multiply it by Pi (roughly 3) and then be close to the band size.. is that more accurate. Because then we can just keep a probe in our kit and have a more accurate guess every time?
Answer: This method would give you a very approximate circumference, since the shape of the tooth is not perfectly circular and more rectangular. I think you will find that over time you will get used to estimating the size of the band by eye.

Question: I am ordering space maintainer 1st time. what is the difference between S/M band kit vs S/M 1st and 2nd primary kit. can I order only S/M band kit and would it work with all 1st and 2nd primary teeth? what other wires?? or bands Do I need to start with??
Answer: The band kit is a bit more versatile as it covers the range of primary molar sizes (23-42). The S/M Crowns are used for added stability and tend to be used more for distal shoe placement. When you purchase a band kit, it has everything you need to get started except for the luting agent (cement).

Question: Hello, I have a question. Is there bands in the kit that fits permanent molars? Introductory S/M Band Kit387-350 — Question From Ferdman, Olga
Answer: The larger band sizes should accommodate most 1st permanent molar sizes. If not, you will need to order an appliance from the lab.

Question: You're website states that the intro kits comes with 1 of each size Space Maintainer Bands (total of 48).....what do the sizes range from in millimeters?
Answer: The sizes range from 25 to 41, with half sizes starting at 33, for both the upper and lower arch. The band size relates to the length of the band in millimeters (if it was cut and laid out as a strip).

Question: How do you know which size band to use? I waste a lot of bands when I guess the incorrect size. Any suggestions?
Answer: When you trial fit your band, don't seat the band fully; carefully check the band using light pressure - if the band doesn't slide on easily, use the next band size up. You can then sterilize and re-use the band instead of throwing it away. There are also devices on the market that will measure the diameter of the tooth that you can use - or you utilize a piece of dental floss to measure the outside diameter. Our band sizes are inside diameter sizes in millimeters.

Question: I have an old space maintainer kit that I've been using for years. I want to order a new kit, but I don't need another crimping plier. Can I just order a kit without the plier?
Answer: Yes. Search for part numbers 387-160 or 387-360. These kits do not include the tube crimping and plier and are less expensive.

Question: I'm worried about the wire drifting into the patients gums? Is this device as sturdy as a lab device?
Answer: Yes, a Denovo chairside device is just as sturdy as any comparable lab device and this has even been vetted though a couple studies. To prevent wire drift we recommend using the drop wire, which curves up to meet the opposing tooth, or customizing a plain wire (with our 2-jaw or 3-jaw pliers) to add this curvature. The upward curve prevents the wire from being pressed down into the gum. Our new demonstration video gives a good visual on both wires.
