Product Description
All Purpose Dental Wire Shear — cuts clean with no burs or sharp edges. Spring action in the handle provides positive return for effortless cutting. Perfect for applications that require a clean, smooth cut orthodontic wire without distortion — for example, trimming the Chairside Space Maintainer wires, where a bur-free cut is crucial to ensure easy and proper fit into the pre-welded tubing.
Two carbide blade cutting chambers (top and side) can accommodate wire up to 1.2mm (0.045″).
WARNING: Carbide cutters will dull if instrument is autoclaved or put in a chemical bath. Use sterile cloth to wipe down instrument between uses only. If full sterilization is required for use in a surgical setting, we recommend the Distal End Safety Hold Cutter.

Instrument Care:
Usage: Estimate and trim space maintainer wires down before contact with oral cavity or fluids occurs. Use non-contaminated gloves if possible.
Immediately after Use: Flush any debris from the instrument surfaces before it dries. Use water temperature from 104°-140° F (40°-60° C). Inspect the instrument hinge, spring and tips for breakage or other damage.
Sterilize: Use sterile cloth to wipe down instrument. DO NOT autoclave, chemiclave, dry heat or cold sterilize the wire shear. This will cause the carbide blades to rust and dull.
Dry: Dry instruments thoroughly to prevent corrosion. The inner parts of the hinges and spring will require more time to dry.
More detailed information on sterilization can be found here.

Question: Hello, I am interested in finding the manufacturer instructions and recommendations for proper sterilization and maintenance of the Denovo Wire Cutting Shears. I have recently run into problems with the shears becoming corroded and rusting. Is there any specific products that are needed to prevent this, such as a milk bath treatment? Thank you in advance for your response.
Answer: The wire shear (part number 802-020) cannot be autoclaved or chemiclaved. To sanitize the wire shear, wipe the instrument with cavi-wipes or other disinfectant wipe. Care must be taken not to get the carbide shearing surfaces wet - they will pit and get dull if exposed to moisture.

Question: What do you recommend to clean the wire cutting pliers since they cannot be autoclaved? Also, what do you recommend to use to shorten the female end of the space maintainer tubes?
Answer: For the wire shear, use a sterilizing wipe. If you immerse the plier in liquid, the carbide blades will pit and dull. For shortening the tubes, use a diamond disc on your handpiece.

Question: Can this instrument be sterilized using a Sterrad (hydrogen peroxide) method?
Answer: No, submerging in liquid or other methods of steam or dry heat sterilization will dull the carbide blades. Since the wire shear usually only touches wires and not the patients mouth, we recommend wiping it down with a TB kill disinfectant. If the instrument is intended for use in a hospital or surgical center where full sterilization is required, we recommend using our Distal End Cutter (part no. 805-551) which can be autoclaved.
